Cries of the World was painted in response to the pain I felt and experienced in the Zeitgeist when we witnessed the murder of George Floyd by law enforcement in Minneapolis, MN, on Memorial Day weekend, 2020. Witnessing his death hit me hard, because while I do not currently live in Minneapolis, I once lived just blocks from where he was killed, and used to stand daily at that corner.
I live a life protected by my white privilege, so I witness the pain of my sisters and brothers of color with compassion. This painting is part of that witnessing.
